Root Cellar

Root Cellar

The owners of this 18th century home were fortunate to have in their backyard a space that homeowners of newer projects spend six figures trying to recreate: an early root cellar. Typical in the 18th and 19th century, these were "refrigerators" for the storage of vegetables, dairy products and other perishables, taking advantage of the thermal mass of the earth, deep underground. No refrigeration system needed here! The very floors themselves have a story to tell: enormous slabs of Valley Forge marble, unearthed from the mud that hid them for many years.
